CAPLET (1878-1925) Mélodies Le Vieux Coffret Viens! Une Flute Invisible La Croix Douloureuse Détresse Ecoute Trois Fables de La Fontaine Cinq Ballades Françaises Lionel Peintre (bar) Alain Jacquon (piano) Etienne Plasman (flute) rec Luxembourg, Villa Louvigny 18-20 Sept 2000 TIMPANI C10518 [62.32] |
Peintre and Jacquon are stalwarts of the Timpani label and each is in warm and subtle form for these songs. Peintre has an exultantly generous tone illustrated by the third song in Le Vieux Coffret. Caplet's mode is bound up in nostalgic oneiromancy and impressionism. His songs are consistent in mood and completely accomplished in conjuring and sustaining the inherent sigh and nostalgia. If you are trying to get a handle on his sound then think in terms of Debussy and Delage as well as the dreamier songs of Poulenc.
Etienne Plasman plays Syrinx to Peintre and Jacquon in the Grecian idyll of Viens! Une flute invisible. The flute also appears in Ecoute: assertive and masculine, fiery and virtuosic. The spell is transformed into a Pierrot garden - moonlight and harmonic adventures - in Le Croix and Détresse. The Trois Fables are a chilly step further into the nightmare garden. The Cinq Ballades recall early Britten and late Poulenc - easier to assimilate than the Fables but noticeably on the same developmental dactyl.
Full texts and translations are provided by Timpani. The notes are by Guy Sacre whose own songs are on Timpani 1C1051.
L'Adieu en barque (tr 18), Berceuse (tr. 2) and Viens! Une Flute Invisible (tr.5) are the tracks to sample.
Caplet is a significant songster at ease on the limb established by Debussy and nurtured by Poulenc.
