Jean-Paul Fouchécourt is a high tenor, well known for his work in
the French baroque haut-contre repertoire, recently seen as Rameau's
Platée, and reviewed
by Seen&Heard at the Wigmore
Hall. That 'unusual, and unusually pleasing' recital of delectable
melodies and chansons gave a foretaste of Fouchécourt's
recording project, to trace French song from the air de cour until
today, of which this CD is the first volume.
These twenty-two songs, mainly of 17th 18th C., have
to be realised from spare music texts, 'just a vocal line and a bass line,
nothing more'. He has worked on them to discover a new musical grammar,
improvising ornamentation, each take 'an act of the moment, something that
cannot be fixed once and for all'. Fouchécourt's sense of discovery
extends to the inclusion of 'a wink at the 20th C.' with
Marquise by Brassens, to demonstrate continuity of the genre into
our own times.
The poetic texts, all included with translations in this impeccable production,
range from expression of intimate emotions to the sexually explicit and bawdy.
The voice is cool and elegant, and the embellishment entirely convincing.
The accompaniments, with a variety of instruments, makes for variety and
a delightful experience.
