This disc is an interesting combination of various short pieces from the enterprising American label, Dorian. The period is late 16th to 17th centuries and includes some very intriguing styles ranging from the inimitable flourishes of Frescobaldi to the almost unknown prowess of Biagio Marini. The number of harpsichord and organ solos are brilliantly played by Byron Schenkman who is definitely a virtuoso player of the highest order. I warmed to his interpretation of Frescobaldi's 'Canzona Quarta' and the short but very alive pieces by Giovanni Picchi who is apparently another 'discovery' on disc. The other players are also well-groomed artists who lend expression and style in the sonata items, which are also brilliantly exposed by Dorian's rich and lifelike recording. The whole project is admirably conceived and with detailed notes and superb presentation deserves an immediate unqualified recommendation.
