Here is real virtuosity in the tradition of Italian composer-instrumentalists
like Corelli, Paganini & Bottestini, by a player who believes that "finally
- - the contrabass has found its fullest expression - - - its supposed weaknesses
- - prove now, thanks to the latest techniques developed in recent decades,
to be its positive qualities." He explores in this rich compendium "a wealth
of sound possibilities difficult to find in any other string instrument".
Born in 1956, Stefano Scodanibbio collaborated with Nono and Scelsi,
and was rated by Cage as "amazing - - I never heard better doublebass playing
- - absolutely magic". He has championed works specially composed for him
by Donatoni, Ferneyhough, Globokar, Sciarrino and Xenakis, amongst many others,
extending the colours and range of the double-bass, and displays to the full
the new techniques which he has created in this beautifully recorded CD,
which is illustrated with several of the scores.
The pleasure is all in the sound and analysis would be gratuitous. Enjoy,
if you have open ears, this generous hour and ten minutes of music composed
between 1981 and 1998.
