DEBUSSY

String Quartet in G minor, op. 10
RAVEL

String Quartet in F major.
Lasalle Quartet.
DG Classikon 469-591-2. [52]
Crotchet

This is a bargain of bargains! The Lasalle Quartet's legendary prowess in modern chamber works has been lionized the world over with a flood of discs that remain amongst the most significant in the catalogues. These are famous early 70s recordings and they receive definitive performances. Debussy's quartet shines through in an impressionistic image that is chiefly mirrored in the final movement bubbling with passion and virtuosity. In the Ravel, the Lasalle Quartet are more subtle, more technically minded, as this is a work that contains many pitfalls but which is ultimately one of the finest quartets of the 20th century. Short but informative notes and a cleanly remastered recording cannot but seal a definitive recommendation.
