This follow up to a similarly titled volume contains many works that are
only slightly known. The pleasant melodies and light-hearted spirit are never
in doubt although some heavyweight names are on the roster. Larsson's Lyric
fantasy is almost Tomlinson-like in its easy-going nature and Sundkvist coaxes
some beautiful sounds out of the SCO. De Frumerie's Pastoral Suite makes
use of a very soft flute sound and the manner is similarly reflective and
serene. 'The wakeful Night' is one of Blomdahl's many stage works, the majority
of which are unfortunately neglected. This melodious Adagio is very effective
as a concert piece. We are used to hearing Kurt Atterberg in major symphonic
brushes but he shows his versatility in this perfectly composed Suite for
violin, viola and string orchestra where each instrument plays an extremely
important role. Larsson's famous Little serenade and equally tuneful Adagio
complement Ture Rangstrom's more overtly involving 'Divertimento elegiaco'
which is the most searching work on disc. The recorded sound is beautifully
translucent and intimate with Sundkvist turning out consistently charming
and persuasive performances of this 'roll-call' from Swedish Radio in the
years of the last century. Highly recommended especially to those who have
bought the first volume. Others will not go far wrong if they buy both!
