This is the first in a series of three CDs with which Danacord intends to celebrate Bach's 250th anniversary, and what better way to do that than to relish the organ works, sublime archictectural masterpieces that remain mysterious to this day. Hans Helmut Tillmanns is a great organist, with splendid touch and a complete grasp of the repertoire as is demonstrated in this disc dedicated to the larger pieces. The famous Toccata and Fugue is given a titanic interpretation, polished and refreshing with a grand wallop in that famous opening Toccata that recalls many dark hues! The gigantic Toccata and Fugue in F major is even more impressive especially using the Lubeck organ, a marvelously sonorous instrument that is tailor-made for Bach's music. Tillmanns plays with breathtaking virtuosity throughout and his mastery of the instrument. The same goes for Tillmanns' playing in the legendary 'Doric' Fugue, a classic example of baroque playing on the Wagner organ in Brandenburg. Danacord's engineers have recorded the instrument in a splendid acoustic that truly portrays the splendour of this instrument. Finally, Tillmanns concludes with a mammothly shaped version of the Toccata, Adagio and Fugue, another classic version that rivals the best on record although Christopher Herrick is quite magnificent and remains the best interpretation all around. Danacord's recording is quite outstanding in all four venues and confirms the technology that permeates this Danish label.
