ARNOLD, Malcolm

He won a scholarship in 1938 to the Royal College of Music, to study
composition and trumpet. In 1941 he won the Cobbett Prize, and in 1942
joined the London Philharmonic Orchestra as First Trumpet. After war
service from 1944 to 1945 he rejoined the LPO in 1946. In 1948 he won
the Mendelssohn Scholarship and spent a year in Italy. He was awarded
the title of honorary doctor of music at Exeter University in 1969,
and in 1970 was made a CBE.
