d Madrid, 14 January 1949, aged sixty-six
He made his debut as a pianist in 1897. He went to Madrid, where he befriended Falla, and studied at the Madrid Conservatory. He moved to Paris in 1905. Though influenced by d'Indy and Debussy, he was advised by Albeniz to look for material in Spanish folk music. He graduated from the Scola Cantorum in Paris in 1913, and became choirmaster of the Teatro Real in Madrid until its closure in 1925. He was professor of composition at Madrid Conservatory in 1930. Though persecuted by republicans during the Civil War he found favour again afterwards and was awarded the Spanish Grand Cross. He was for a number of years the music critic for a newspaper.
