TOMKINS, Thomas

The son of a churchman, he became vocal instructor at Worcester Cathedral in 1596. He was later appointed Gentleman in Ordinary at the Chapel Royal, and organist there in 1621. He was well connected with all the great names of his day, being especially active in Worcester. When the parliamentary forces dismantled the cathedral organ in 1646 he continued to live in the cathedral precincts until 1654.

He left some liturgical works, a great number of anthems, madrigals, keyboard works and consort music.
