SCHUBERT, Franz
b Vienna, 31 January 1797
d Vienna, 19 November 1828, aged thirty-one
His father was a schoolmaster and a keen amateur musician; Franz learned violin from him and piano from his elder brother. In 1808 he was accepted as a choirboy in the court chapel; then he became a schoolteacher, composing in his spare time. His songs attracted immediate attention, and in 1816 he temporarily gave up teaching in order to compose. In 1818 he had the opportunity to teach music to the children of Count Esterhazy, and so he moved to Hungary. However, he soon missed his beloved Vienna and his great circle of friends, and went back horn e. In 1822 he became ill with syphilis, but it was typhoid that ultimately killed him.
