SCHREKER, Franz

d Berlin, 21 March 1934, aged fifty-five
He studied violin and composition from 1892 to 1900 at the Vienna Conservatory. He achieved his first success in 1908 with a ballet, and in that same year founded the Philharmonic Choir, which he conducted until 1920. In 1912 he was appointed to teach composition at the Vienna Akademie fur Musik, and in 1920 was made director of the Berlin Hochschule, staying there until 1932. He was dismissed from this post in 1932 and took over a master-class in composition at the Prussian Academy of Arts, from which he was also dismissed in 1933. The shock caused a fatal heart attack.
