SCHMITT, Florent
b Blamont, Meurthe-et-Moselle, 28 September 1870
d Neuilly-sur-Seine, 17 August 1957, aged eighty-seven
At the age of seventeen he was admitted to the Nancy Conservatory to study piano and harmony, and at nineteen entered the Paris Conservatory. He won the Prix de Rome in 1900 at his fifth attempt. He was director of the Lyons Conservatory from 1922 to 1924, and music critic of Le Temps from 1929 to 1939. He was a member of the Institut Francais and commander of the Legion d'honneur.
