RUBBRA, Edmund

He studied privately under Cyril Scott, and won composition scholarships to Reading University (1920) and the Royal College of Music (1921). From 1947 to 1968 he was lecturer in music at Oxford University and from 1961 professor of composition at the Guildhall School. Among his awards are a Collard Fellowship in 1948; the Cobbett Medal (1955); an honorary LLD at Leicester University (1959); the CBE (1960); and Fellowship of Worcester College, Oxford (1963). He was also a fellow of the Guildhall School of Music and a member of the Royal Academy of Music. Held degrees of MA (Oxford) and honorary Dmus (Durham).
