REICH, Steve Michael
b New York, 3 October 1936
He studied at Cornell University from 1953 to 1957, graduating with honours in Philosophy; then studied music at the Juillard School from 1958 to 1961, moving on to Mills College in 1963 where he worked with Milhaud and Berio and received his MA in music. In 1966 he formed his own group of keyboard and percussion instrumentalists. He spent the summer of 1970 studying Amcan drumming and the summer of 1973 in Balinese music. From 1976-7 he studied ancient Hebrew chanting. In 1978 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship.
