RAWSTHORNE, Alan
b Haslingden, Lancashire, 2 May 1905
d Cambridge, 24 July 1971, aged sixty-six
Though trained as a dentist, he entered the Royal Manchester College of Music in his early twenties, studying piano, cello and composition. In 1930 he went abroad to continue his studies, and from 1932 to 1934 he taught at Dartington Hall, composing there for the School of Dance-Mime. He settled in London in 1935, and served in the Army during World War II. He was awarded the CBE in 1961, and was made honorary doctor of music of Liverpool, Essex and Belfast universities.
