PONCHIELLI, Amilcare

d Milan, 17 January 1886, aged fifty-one

He was the son of a shopkeeper. He went to the Milan Conservatory at the age of nine, and became a bandmaster in Piacenze. Success did not really arrive until 1872, when he was commissioned to write an opera for the Teatro dal Verme in Milan. During his last ten years he was maestro di cappella of Bergamo Cathedral and professor of composition at the Milan Conservatory.
