MILHAUD, Darius

d Geneva, 22 June 1974, aged eighty-one
By the time he entered the Paris Conservatory at the
age of seventeen he was already an accomplished violinist and organist,
and a developing composer. He went to Brazil from 1917 to 1918, and
afterwards made two visits to the USA. In 1940 he took up an appointment
at Mills College, Oakland, California, but after World War II returned
to France, becoming professor of composition at the Paris Conservatory
in 1947. Despite severe arthritis he remained active for the rest of
his life.
