LULLY, Jean-Baptiste
b Florence, 29 November 1632
d Paris, 22 March 1687, aged fifty-four
He was the son of a Florentine miller. At fourteen he became valet de chambre to Mlle de Montpensier, cousin of the Chevalier de Guise. Between his arrival in France and 1652 he studied composition; then he left de Montpensier for the court, where he made his mark not only as a musician but also as a dancer. He became a favourite of Louis XIV, producing for him a stream of ballets - usually in collaboration with Moliere - until 1671. He became a naturalised Frenchman in 1661 and married in 1662. His association with Moliere ended when Lully pressed the king to award him a series of patents which gave him complete monopoly and domination of the Parisian theatre. While conducting a Te Deum to celebrate the king's recovery from a serious illness, he stabbed a cane into his foot, and died from the subsequent infection.
