KHACHATURIAN, Aram

d Moscow, 1 May 1978, aged seventy-four
The son of an Armenian bookbinder, he had no particular interest in music until he was nineteen, when he approached Gnesin, a pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov, because he wanted to compose but knew nothing about music. In 1929 he entered the Moscow Conservatory, staying there for five years. His Violin Concerto of
1940 won for him the Stalin Prize.
