HlNDEMlTH, Paul
b Hanau, 16 November 1895
d Frankfurt, 28 December 1963, aged sixty-eight
He was one of three gifted children who appeared in public very young as a trio. At the age of thirteen he entered the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt-am-Main. He was conscripted into the Army in 1917 and served for eighteen months. He then became principal violinist in the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra until 1923, and continued his career as performer and teacher. In 1927 he moved to Berlin to become professor of composition at the Hochschule, but after 1933 he fell foul of Nazi propaganda. He left Germany in 1935, not returning until after the war. He went to Turkey for a year, then to the USA, where in 1940 he joined the musical staff of Yale and in 1946 became an American citizen. He toured Europe, was appointed to the music faculty at Zurich University in 1948 and settled in Switzerland in 1953. His health declined rapidly in the
1960s, and he died of a stroke.
