HANSON, Howard

His initial musical education was with his mother, he then went to Luther College, the Institute of Musical Art of New York, and graduated from the Northwestern University. At age twenty he joined the faculty of the College of the Pacific, becoming dean of their Conservatory of Fine Arts three years later. In 1921 he won the Prix de Rome, then accepted the position of director of the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester. He has received no less than thirty-five honorary degrees and countless commissions and honours, including, in 1944, the Pulitzer Prize.
