GRANDJANY, Marcel

d New York, 24 February 1975, aged eighty-three

He studied harp at the Paris Conservatory, winning the Premier Prix at the age of thirteen. He made his Paris debut as a harpist at the age of seventeen, giving recitals until World War I, when he served in the French Army. After the war he continued to give recitals, and taught at the Fontainebleau Summer School from 1921 to 1936, after which he went to the USA. He became head of the Juillard harp department in 1938 and at the Conservatoire de Musique in Quebec from 1938 to 1958. He was made a US citizen in 1945. From 1956 to 1966 he taught at the Manhattan School of Music.
