GRAINGER, Percy Aldridge
b Melbourne, Australia, 8 July 1882
d New York, 20 February 1961, aged seventy-eight
He studied in Melbourne, in Frankfurt, and with Busoni in Berlin, making
his first concert appearance as a pianist in England in 1900. There
followed tours of South Africa and Australia, and he made his American
debut in New York in 1915. From 1917 to 1919 he served with the US Army
as bandsman and music instructor, and became a US citizen in 1918. From
1919 to 1931 he taught piano at the Chicago Musical College, and was
made chairman of the music department of New York University in 1932.
Among his close friends were Grieg and Delius.
