GOSSEC, Francois Joseph

d Passy, 16 February 1829, aged ninety-five
The son of a Belgian farmer, he was a chorister at Antwerp Cathedral until the age of fifteen. He went to Paris in 1751 to conduct a private orchestra, and in 1762 he entered the service of the Prince of Conde. He was subsequently in demand to conduct many orchestras, and was professor of composition at the Paris Conservatory from 1795 to 1815. In 1802 he was given the Legion d 'honneur.
