GADE, Niels Wilhelm

d Copenhagen, 11 December 1890, aged seventy-three
He was the son of an instrument maker, and entered the Royal Danish orchestra as a violinist. In 1841 he won a prize that enabled him to travel in Germany and Italy. He befriended Mendelssohn in Leipzig. From 1861 he was the court Kapellmeister, and from 1867 one of the directors of the Copenhagen Conservatory. He received his PhD in 1879, and in 1886 was made Commander of the Order of Daneborg. He visited England in 1876.
