DVORAK, Antonin
b Nelahozeves, Bohemia, 8 September 1841
d Prague, 1 May 1904, aged sixty-two
His father, a village butcher and publican, had an interest in music and played the zither. Dvorak studied singing, violin, piano and organ. When he was sixteen he went to Prague to study, and in order to earn money he played viola in cafes and the organ in a mental asylum. In 1862 Smetana started to establish the National Theatre of Prague, and Dvorak joined it as a viola player and stayed for about ten years. He left to take a position as a church organist, which gave him more time for composition. He was much encouraged by Brahms. From 1892 to 1895 he was in New York as head of the National Conservatory; then he returned to Prague where, a few years later, he became head of the Conservatory there.
