D'INDY, Vincent
b Paris, 27 March 1851
d Paris, 2 December 1931, aged eighty
He was born into a noble family, and had a very strict upbringing. He studied piano with his paternal grandmother, and soon became a prodigy. He began studying harmony at the age of fourteen. After distinguished service during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, he studied with Franck at the Paris Conservatory. His association with Saint-Saëns, Massenet, Bizet, Brahms, Liszt and Wagner gave him a wide horizon of musical ideas. He formed the Schola Cantorum, and was its principal and chief lecturer. He was a teacher of great influence.
