COWIE, Edward
b Birmingham, 17 August 1943
Studied first at the Trinity College of Music and later
with Fricker, Goehr and Lutoslawski. In 1973 he was appointed lecturer
and composer-in-residence at Lancaster University; visited the USA for
the first time in 1977; in 1979 was guest professor at the University
of Kassel, West Germany; was made professor of creative arts at the
University of Wollongong, New South Wales, in 1983, and for 1983-6 the
composer-in-residence for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Since returning to England in 1995, Cowie has quickly re-established
himself as a major and unique 'voice' in British music. He is now published
by UMP ). He has recently been appointed
the first Composer in Association with the BBC Singers, a position he
will hold until 2005. He has also been appointed the first Artist in
residence with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, a position
he will also hold until the end of 2005. He is now Professor and Director
of Research at Dartington College of Arts, Devon England. He is now
working on musical commissions, continues to paint and exhibit and is
