CORELLI, Arcangelo

d Rome, 8 January 1713, aged fifty-nine

He started his studies at a very early age, and was admitted to the Accademia Filarmonica in Bologna in 1670. In 1675 he went to Rome, playing as a theatre violinist, and by 1679 was directing the orchestra at the Teatro Capranica, earning very high fees. In 1687 he became music master to Cardinal Panfili, and in 1689 director of music of the household of Cardinal Ottobini. He was admitted to the exclusive Accademia dei Arcadi. As a violinist his influence over the succeeding generation of players was enormous.
