He studied at the Royal Academy of Music from 1918 to 1922. In 1921 he met Ireland, and was his pupil from 1922 to 1927. In 1925 he was appointed professor at the Royal Academy. He went to Berlin in 1929, studying philosophy and musicology at the university. In 1935 he became a member of the Communist Party, and the following year he formed the Workers' Music Association. He served in the Army from 1941 to 1950, and afterwards toured as conductor, mainly in East European countries.
