BERNERS, Gerald Hugh Tyrwhitt-Wilson (Lord Berners)

d London, 19 April 1950, aged sixty-six


He was educated at Eton. As a composer he was mainly self-taught, though he received encouragement from Stravinsky and Casella. He joined the diplomatic service and became honorary attaché to Constantinople (1909-11)
and Rome (1911-19). He wrote under the name of Gerald Tyrwhitt until succeeding his uncle as the 14th Baron and 5th Baronet in 1919. Though virtually an amateur, he had many literary and musical friends - Walton dedicated Belshazzar's Feast to him. He also wrote two volumes of autobiography and some novels, and was a talented painter.
