ALFVEN, Hugo

d Falun, Sweden, 8 May 1960, aged eighty-eight
A violinist, he went to Stockholm Conservatory from
1887 to 1891, and played in an opera orchestra from 1890 to 1892. He
then toured Europe as a conductor, specialising in choral works. From
1910 to 1939 he was musical director at Uppsala University.

Between 1898 and 1937 Alfven wrote a number of piano
pieces, and between 1900 and 1928 he wrote ten cantatas, for solo voices,
chorus and orchestra.
