Angele Dubeau is a Canadian violinist from Quebec. She has performed in concert halls around the world, and this is her 40th recording. Angele founded La Pieta, an all-female string ensemble, in 1997. This two-disc set is an interesting collection of music taken from film scores and arranged for a string ensemble.
Tubular Bells was composed by Mike Oldfield, and the unusual piece appeared in the 1973 film The Exorcist as a spooky, repeating ostinato built by adding odd instruments, layer upon layer, to a mesmerizing rhythm and melody. Pianist Amelie Fortin begins with a simple repeating piano phrase, and is joined by the other instruments, building tension with each addition. Trevor Jones composed The Kiss, one of nine pieces he wrote for the 1992 film The Last of the Mohicans (Randy Edelman composed the other six songs for the score). The Kiss is arranged and adapted from Dougie Maclean’s tune The Gael, a Celtic classic frequently performed with bagpipes. The ensemble performs it here with Angele’s lively and intoxicating violin solo supported by cellos below and violins above.
Smooth Criminal was composed by Michael Jackson and appears in the short film of the same name, and is also a part of his 1988 feature film Moonwalker. The song was previously recorded on his Bad album, released in 1987. Francois Vallieres provided arrangements for 13 songs in this collection, and he created a remarkable arrangement for strings for Smooth Criminal, resulting in a lucid, energetic, well-played performance with polyphonic melodies and the dancing rhythm shifts that Michael was so well-known for. Misirlou is a delightful folk tune of uncertain Turkish or Egyptian origin, and a favorite of fans of belly dancers and castanets everywhere. Nick Roubanis released a jazz instrumental version in 1941, and Bob Russell, Milton Leeds and Fred Wise added lyrics later. Dick Dale released his famous rock version played on one guitar string in 1962 on the Deltone Records label, and the song appeared in the 1994 film Pulp Fiction. The ensemble performs an amazing version with Angele’s violin soaring to the roof with vibrato and precision over the ensemble’s tight rhythm section.
Sergei Rachmaninov composed Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini in the summer of 1934. The popular 18th Variation has appeared in various television and film scores, notably in the 1980 film Somewhere in Time, a romantic fantasy drama scored by John Barry and starring Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour and Christopher Plummer. The movie was filmed on location at the fabulous Grand Hotel, known for having the world’s longest front porch, located on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Film composer and musician James Newton Howard was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score for the film The Village, released in 2004. Gilles Ouellet arranged eight of the songs for this collection, and the ensemble performs a medley of his arrangement of Noah’s Visit, The Gravel Road, and The Vote from that score. The tunes vary a bit in style and harmonic depth, but all three are gentle, drifting, and melodious. Yumeji’s Theme, composed by Japanese composer Shigeru Umebayashi, appeared in the 2000 film In the Mood for Love, an interesting romantic drama filmed in Hong Kong. Angele plays a haunting solo melody accompanied by the entire ensemble plucking in three-quarter time.
