BARGAIN OF THE MONTH
For around £1 per CD, this box is magnificent value – at the
time of writing there’s a button to purchase for £35 on the
left of the MusicWeb International page – so it’s well worth
considering even by those who already have several recordings
of Vivaldi. Considering that the first recording of the Four
Seasons which I bought around 1960 on Ace of Clubs cost
the equivalent of at least £25 in modern values, the value of
this set really is exceptional. You could end up paying half
its price for two CDs of Vivaldi’s music. Add the fact that
almost all the performances are well worth hearing, with very
few turkeys in terms of performance or recording, and the bargain
is complete.
I’m not going to make too many detailed comparisons, because
you either take the set or leave it as it is, though certain
of the constituent parts are available separately – inevitably
at a slightly higher cost per CD. Just to confuse matters, Brilliant
have also compiled smaller sets, including one of 10 CDs entitled
Essential Vivaldi (94136), containing some of the same
recordings together with others.
Some other recordings here are also available on other Brilliant
Classics releases: the Opera Overtures (CD11) are available
separately on 94030, the Concerti for Strings from CD20
on 93315, and the Organ Concertos (CD12) are available
separately (94059), around £5 each. The Cello Sonatas
from Jaap ter Linden and Mortensen (CDs17-18) are also available
separately (93567, 2 CDs, around £8.75). CD10 of my review set
appears to have been removed for separate sale (see below).

One obvious comparison is with the 5-CD DG Archiv Collectors’
Box of performances by The English Concert and Trevor Pinnock,
containing L’Estro Armonico, Op.3, the Flute Concertos,
Op.10, and a variety of concertos for various instruments (471
3172), a smaller but completely distinguished set for around
£29 in the UK. If you’re not looking for quite the same completeness
that the Brilliant Box offers, that’s a really tempting bargain.
The Academy of Ancient Music/Christopher Hogwood set containing
Op.3, Op.4, Op.8 and Op.9 – almost eight hours of stylish Vivaldi
performances on Decca Collectors’ Edition, 475 7693 – also sells
for around that price as a download from Passionato.com – here
– but it was available at half price at the time of writing
(£12.49 instead of £24.99).
The first two CDs, containing the Four Seasons and the
remainder of Op.8 fall into the separately available category
(93155, 2 CDs for around £8). These are good middle-of-the-road
performances from 2006, played on period instruments by La Magnifica
Comunitą/Enrico Casazza, lacking only the distinctiveness of
my favourite versions – Loveday/Marriner (Decca, Seasons
only); Montanari/Dantone (Arts, Op.8 complete); Biondi (Virgin,
Op.3 and Op.8 in a super-budget CD set for around £11.50, 6484082)
and Pinnock (dal Segno or DGG Archiv, Seasons only).
You’ll find a detailed comparison of these in a recent review
– here.
As introductory sets of Vivaldi go, however, these Casazza recordings
are preferable to those of Claudio Scimone on a Warner Classics
2-CD set which I recently reviewed in download form in my March
2011/1 Download Roundup.
One considerable advantage of the Pinnock set on DGG is that
it doesn’t contain a version of the Seasons, on the reasonable
assumption that you already have a recording of them. If not,
it allows you to choose – preferably from one of those which
I mention above. You may even find that you need more than one
– perhaps the Marriner for a version on modern instruments and
Biondi or Dantone for period performances.
The Concerti solenni on CD5 are again available separately
on 9198 (around £5). These performances are billed as first
recordings. Once more they are provided by the period-instrument
group La Magnifica Comunitą, who also record for Tactus, though
the disc is apparently not licensed from them like some of the
discs in the box. RV316a and RV185 are variant forms of works
which appeared as Op.4/6 and 7 and RV292 may well be the work
of Antonio Cheller. Nevertheless, these are stylish performances
of attractive music, well recorded.
I Filarmonici and Alberto Martini provide the Op.3 Concertos,
L’Estro armonico, on CDs 3 and 4. They have made some
recordings for Naxos – I enjoyed their Vivaldi Dresden Concertos
and Veracini Overturtes and Concertos on that label,
where Martini is a fine director and soloist – but these two
discs are licensed from Tactus where they first appeared in
2004. Tempi are not, for the most part, hugely different from
Trevor Pinnock’s (DGG Archiv set, above) but Martini sounds
just a little sluggish by comparison. The recording is not ideal,
though the sound improves – or the ear adjusts – after a while,
but never completely: I noted the same hollowness on another
Tactus recording featuring I Filarmonici in Pergolesi – see
review.
The two discs of Op.3 together are short value – it’s usual
to offer fillers with Op.3, as on the classic ASMF/Marriner
set (formerly on Double Decca – grab it is you can – now, surprisingly,
available only in a single-CD selection on Australian Decca
Eloquence 467 4322), but that hardly matters when the whole
box comes so cheaply and the playing is idiomatic and enjoyable,
a modern-instrument ensemble to please even hardened authenticists
if the recording were more amenable.
The Op.4 collection, la Stravaganza, is the neglected
masterpiece among the named sets of concertos. I Filarmonici’s
performances are stylish and well recorded, but, here and in
Op.3 they are up against stiff competition from Fabio Biondi
on the Virgin set to which I’ve referred in the case of Op.8
(above) and, for lovers of modern instruments, Neville Marriner
on an inexpensive Double Decca set (444 8212, around £6.50,
and generously coupled). The recording on CDs 16-17 is not ideal,
but better than some of the other Tactus-derived CDs in the
set.
The recording of La Cetra on CDs 18-19 is better, though
a trifle bass-heavy. With a different violinist, too, Roberto
Baraldi, in place of director Alberto Martini, I thought the
performances rather more competitive than their Op.3 and Op.4:
I enjoyed these performances and the competition here is less
stiff, with the ASMF/Marriner versions, formerly on a Double
Decca set, no longer available. Remember that the two Tactus
CDs from which these performances are taken would cost more
than half the price of the complete 40-CD Brilliant Box.
The Recorder Concertos (CD6) are available separately
on Brilliant Classics 93804 (around £5). The period performances
are good – stylish and well recorded – but it’s something of
a moot question what constitutes a Vivaldi Recorder Concerto,
since some of the music here was rehashed as part of the Op.10
Flute Concertos: La Tempesta di Mare, RV98, also
features as Op.10/1, RV433, and La notte (RV439) is also
Op.10/2. No matter – the Op.10 set is not included in this package
–a surprise in view of its popularity. If you want the Op/10
concertos, they’re included in the DG Archiv 5-CD box (above)
or separately in a decent set of performances on Naxos (Bela
Drahos and the Esterhįzy Sinfonia, 8.553101).
What is on offer here, RV98, RV105 and RV439, 441-44, is a slightly
different collection from what Naxos dubs the ‘complete recorder
concertos’, RV95 and 441-5 (8.553829). Naxos also have a completely
different collection on a CD entitled Recorder Concertos
(8.557215): RV103, 92, 105, 94, 108, 87, and 101. A CPO
collection, also dubbed ‘complete recorder concertos’ contains
a different selection again: RV86, 108 and 441-5. (777 304-2
- see review.)
This was Cordevento’s recent debut album and it marks an auspicious
start. I liked Bosgraaf’s performance of Telemann (Brilliant
93757 – see review),
though I thought the complete disc of solo fantasias too unvaried
for recommendation, a consideration which certainly doesn’t
apply here, where you’re most unlikely to be bored.
I promised not to make too many comparisons, but I can’t help
mentioning a recent recording by Mexican Baroque entitled Venice
in Mexico, containing music by Vivaldi and his contemporary
Giacomo Facco, on which the director Miguel Lawrence performs
RV443 and 445 on sopranino recorder in really sprightly fashion.
(Divine Art DDA25091). It’s Vivaldi with a difference, including
mariachi instruments, vihuela and guitarrón, it contains RV445,
absent from the Brilliant Box, and Facco’s two concertos, not
otherwise available, are well worth hearing. It also mixes the
two recorder concertos with works for other instruments and,
for that reason, avoids the possibility of become sated with
the sound of the recorder. I’ve seen that recording castigated
for its complete abandonment of the period-performance principles
on which most modern Vivaldi is based, but that’s the point
– it’s a one-off fun recording from players who are clearly
enjoying themselves.
On CDs 7-9, the Concertos and Symphonies for Strings,
are recorded by the Budapest Strings on discs licensed from
Nuova Era. Though they perform on modern instruments, these
are stylish accounts, well recorded, on a par with their CD
of seven concertos from Op.8 for Naxos, my copy of which has
only recently gone off to the charity shop because of pressure
of space in a collection which also contains several period-instrument
versions of these works. The playing and/or the recording, licensed
from Nuova Era, is a little heavier than we have become accustomed
to, but I didn’t find that a major problem.
CD10, containing the Mandolin and Lute Concertos is new,
recorded for Brilliant Classics in 2009 by L’Arte del’Arco directed
by Federico Guglielmo. This disc, also available separately
on Brilliant Classics 93810 (around £5), is one of the best
in the set, offering a serious challenge to Il Giardino Armonico,
recently reissued on Teldec 2564698542. I’d still recommend
the Giardino in a straight fight, but the Brilliant single-CD
costs much less and as a percentage of the box even less. L’Arte’s
account of the Concertos with organ obbligato on CD12
is also very stylish.
Having written at some length about the Mandolin and Lute concertos,
I find that they seem to have been replaced in Brilliant Classics’
final scheme – most confusingly, my review set seems not to
accord in all details with what is advertised – see below for
details, as far as I can work them out. No matter: as the review
copy of CD10 is available separately – which is presumably one
reason for the change – you can obtain it on 93810.
The stylish Opera Overtures on CD11 come from Vivaldi
pluralists Modo Antiquo with Federico Maria Sardelli, fast and
furious in the main but completely in character, or, as Mark
Sealey puts it in his review
of a later Modo Antiquo Vivaldi recording for Naļve, there’s
lots of meaning in the way that the music is put together. The
single CD of these is well worth having, if that’s all that
you want (see above), outshining Scimone on Warner Apex, and
the 2001 recording, licensed from Frame, is one of the most
immediate in the whole set. I had time only to dip into this
CD in order to get this review completed, but it’s one of the
constituent parts of the set to which I shall be returning.
Modo Antiquo also contribute the multi-instrument Concerti
per molti istromenti on CD25, another stylish set of performances
in a good but slightly bass-heavy recording. I expected the
performances of these showy works to be a little over-the-top
in the Italian manner; if anything, they are rather restrained,
but not unduly so. There’s some rare material here: as I noted
in my review of Vivaldi’s music in The Rise of the North
Italian Violin Concerto, Volume 3 (La Serenissima, AV2154
– see review),
there are only two current recordings of RV562a and RV569, on
that Avie recording and here, and both are enjoyable. I’m not
going to try to choose, except to note that Modo Antiquo’s tempi
are noticeably faster than their rivals, who live up to the
serenity of their name. RV566 will be more familiar – I’ll leave
you wondering in what alternative guise you’ve heard its finale.
The performances of ten Cello Concertos (CDs13-14) are
rather heavy. Though they are not unenjoyable, they won’t really
serve today – they are more in the style of I Musici’s 1960s
performances: you may wish to supplement them with one or more
of the volumes of the Naļve series on which the concertos are
performed by Christophe Coin and Il Giardino Armonico/Giovanni
Antonini: I reviewed Volume 2 (OP30457) here.
Where the two recordings overlap, Coin and Antonini make the
Heidelbergers sound over-large and liable to make too heavy
weather of this beautiful music. For a smaller monetary layout,
the Naxos series with Raphael Wallfisch, the City of London
Sinfonia and Nicholas Kraemer will also bring greater satisfaction
than these Heidelberg recordings, licensed from Capriccio. Compare
the Naxos version of RV414 (Volume 4, 8.550910) with the Heidelberg
performances and the latter sound laboured. The Naļve and Naxos
recordings also offer more music, typically seven concertos
against five on the Brilliant set. Both the rival recordings
offer (much) faster tempi without losing the emotional power
of the music.
I hadn’t expected to find two of Bach’s organ transcriptions
of Vivaldi concertos, plus arrangements of BWV 972-973, 975,
976 and 978, in such a collection (CD15), but they receive stylish
performances from Elena Barshai. There’s no information about
the organ – it and the chosen registration are a little on the
large side for Bach, but not unduly so – or even the date of
the recording, but it’s given as DDD and I’ve no reason to doubt
that it’s comparatively recent. It appears to have been extracted
from a 2-CD Brilliant Classics release from 2006.
Like Antiquo Modo, Concerto Italiano and Rinaldo Alessandrini
are Vivaldi pluralists, recording for Naļve as well as for Tactus,
from whose catalogue the Concerti per archi (string concertos)
on CD20 are taken. With Fabio Biondi, no less, as violin soloist,
I could almost have guaranteed these 1988 performances without
hearing them. As it is, with stylish playing and just about
the best recording among the Tactus borrowings, only the short-ish
playing time is at all a problem and, once again, the generous
price takes care of that.
Il Giardino Armonico recorded the Concerti da camera
or chamber concertos on CD21 for Nuova Era in 1988. Like Concerto
Italiano they have since recorded for other labels, notably
for Warner/Teldec. They have recorded several volumes of these
chamber concertos for Teldec, but the selection of six on CD21
is very welcome.
Heinz Holliger, the oboist on CD22, is a stylish performer of
baroque music. He’s partnered in the Oboe Concertos by
I Musici, equally stylish performers of Bach and Vivaldi by
the terms of their time. Though their style had come to be rather
outdated by the time of these recordings for Philips in 1975
and 1981 – I doubt if the 1975 recordings are DDD, as the sleeve
claims – these are some of their lighter and sprightlier offerings
and I found them generally enjoyable, especially with Klaus
Thunemann abetting ably on the bassoon in RV545 (tracks 7-9).
RV454 is a variant of Op.8/9 and, though La Magnifica Comunitą
play it at marginally faster tempi on CD2, Holliger and co acquit
themselves with distinction. Despite my doubts about the DDD
provenance of RV463, the recording is good.
The Bassoon Concertos (CD23) are taken from an ASV recording,
with Daniel Smith, the ECO and Sir Philip Ledger. I’m pleased
to see that Universal, who now own ASV but don’t seem to know
what to do with it, are beginning to license some of these recordings.

ASV recorded several volumes with these performers – surely
rather earlier than the date of 1996 which Brilliant claim –
but the single 71-minute selection here is probably enough for
most listeners, despite the quality of the playing and recording.
There’s a complete series on Naxos for those who wish to explore
further.
Musica ad Rhenum contribute the bulk of the Concertos for
diverse instruments on CD24, with Ensemble Florilegium adding
the final Concerto in d. No provenance or venue is given
for this 1993 recording, but the performances are stylish, with
Manfred Kraemer (Musica ad Rhenum) and Rachel Podger (Florilegium)
practically guaranteeing the outcome. The Concerto in D, Il
gardellino (the goldfinch), a variant of the concerto of
that name in the Op.10 set, receives a stylish and lively performance
here.
Around this point there’s a discrepancy between my review copy
and what is advertised as the finished product. CD21 is due
to become a disc of Viola d’amore concertos – I can’t
comment because in my case I have not got this. Nor do I have
the Lute concertos which should form CD18, unless they
overlap with the Mandolin and Lute concertos which form
CD10 of my review set but not of the final version. Nor does
the finished product seem to include my version of CD26, split
between two mandolin concertos and three cello sonatas. From
CD35 onwards, even more problems arise as to what I have received
and what will be available – see below.
I was pleasantly surprised to find an opera recording here in
the form of Il Teuzzone (CDs30-32), available separately
on 93351 (3 CDs, around £9). To the best of my knowledge, this
is the only recording of the work, composed for the 1719 Carnival
season, but the performance is only so-so, with some squally
singing, and you really do need the libretto and translation,
which I assume are provided with the 3-CD set or the Tactus
release on which the performance was first issued (TC672200).
Not having heard this opera before, I found myself as much at
sea as the average listener, though Stanford provide a synopsis
– here.
I did have some harmless fun working out which bits of this
opera Vivaldi had ‘borrowed’ from which of his other works.
Try spotting where track 24 of the first CD comes from – it’s
a work included in this set.
My review copy came with no notes or texts – surely essential
for the kind of beginning collector at whom the set is aimed
and a disappointment when the Brilliant Classics set of Monteverdi’s
Ritorno d’Ulisse comes with the most elaborate booklet
that I’ve ever seen at less than full price, but the final article
is being advertised with an extra CD-ROM, which will, presumably,
supply the necessary – including the libretto of Teuzzone?
Even now Vivaldi’s cantatas and choral music are not the most
common fare, so I was pleased to see that the set is rounded
off with ten discs of this music – or would be if I were sure
what was on my review copies and what will appear in the package
on sale. In fact, there is even more confusion than on some
of the earlier discs.
The review CDs 34 and 35 supposedly offer the Cantatas for
soprano and basso continuo, with Rosanna Bertini (CD34)
and Nicky Kennedy and Elena Cecchi Fedi (CD35) as soloists with
Modo Antiquo and Federico Maria Sardelli. These will be CDs
32-33 in the final product. Modo Antiquo record for Naļve and
CPO with the likes of Sandrine Piau and Philippe Jaroussky:
see, for example, Mark Sealey’s enthusiastic review
of Atenaļde on OP30438. You won’t find singing to equal
that of Piau and Jaroussky here; Bertini falls not far short,
but overall you’re not likely to be too disappointed. The recording
displays none of the problems that I found with other Tactus
offerings.
The only information that I have concerning the finished product
for CDs 34 and 35 is that they will offer ‘Choral Works’. Though
my review CD34 was what it claimed to be, CD35 turned out to
be other than its was described – despite what the label and
sleeve say, it’s actually Volume 35 of the final article. I
appreciate that they changed their minds about the final order
at some late stage, but it would have been helpful if Brilliant
Classics had not only sent out a review set commensurate with
the final version but also if what it says on the label and
sleeve actually corresponded to what is on the disc.
In fact, iTunes with the assistance of Gracenote rode to the
rescue and identified the music as Laudate pueri, RV600,
In furore, RV626, and Nulla in mundo pax, RV630,
performed by the Liszt Chamber Orchestra and Frigyes Sandór.
Thesr are decent performances, but outclassed by the Hyperion
recordings with the King’s Consort: RV600 on CDA66829; RV626
and 630 on CDA66779.
I can’t, therefore, comment on the performances on what will
be Volume 33 of the set. Thankfully, however, CDs 36-40 are
what they claim to be in both versions.
I was surprised to find the less well-known Gloria, RV588,
but disappointed that it was not combined with the better known
Gloria RV598, as Naļve do (Concerto Italiano/Rinaldo
Alessandrini, OP304850) – indeed the better-known work is not
included in the box.
The performances of Gloria and Stabat mater (CD36)
are offered by the same reliable team who recorded the Brilliant
Box of Bach’s Cantatas, the Netherlands Bach Collegium directed
by Pieter Jan Leusink. Reliable is the word here. The Introduction
to the Gloria, RV389, gets off to a good start with sprightly
tempi, but the alto (countertenor) Sytse Buwalda, suffers from
the plumminess that all too often affects altos, so that the
words tend to get lost. I defy you to hear more than the last
word of In tua solemni pompa at the start of track 2.
The other soloists are much more attractive and the Bach Collegium
and the other performers largely make amends, though the weaknesses
of the Holland Boys’ Choir are too often all too apparent. (Listen
to track 4, Et in terra pax, for example – and see Robert
Hugill’s review
of the original single-CD release.)
Alessandrini may be rather fast in this music, but once you
have heard his recording with Sara Mingardo in RV588 this Brilliant
performance comes as an inevitable disappointment. I don’t expect
to listen to Leusink’s team too often, but the rather better
performance of the Stabat mater makes amends – and, of
course, this is a rare dud in such a reasonably-priced box.
Leusink and his team also contribute CDs 37-40. Here again generally
attractive performances suffer from individual shortcomings
– including, in the case of CD38, very short playing time –
but in general the contributions are more reliable than in the
Gloria. Provided that you don’t try detailed comparison,
the Magnificat on CD38 and its three companions make
enjoyable listening. In fact, Leusink’s tempi are almost as
sprightly as those of Robert King and the King’s Consort (RV610a
on Hyperion CDA66769) and Jean Lamon, with Emma Kirkby et
al (610b), also for Hyperion, on their budget label Hyperion
(CDH55190) and, though the singing on both Hyperion versions
is clearly superior, you won’t be seriously disappointed with
Leusink’s team.
To return, then, to where I began: disregard the few below-par
CDs in the set and what you have left offers a tremendous bargain
to beginners and those who have already collected a few Vivaldi
recordings alike. Even with the discrepancies between my review
copies and the advertised package, this has to be a bargain.
With the promised CD-ROM which, I trust, will provide the missing
texts, the bargain is better still.
