Wigmore Hall debut of acclaimed period instrument ensemble, and London première of new arrangement of Handel’s Oxford Water Music.

The Brook Street Band has been invited to perform at the Wigmore Hall on Saturday 27th September 2003.

This debut programme includes the London première of a new arrangement of Handel’s Oxford Water Music Suites, an earlier chamber version of the much loved orchestral work. The hand written music was first identified in Oxford in 1980 by Handel scholar Donald Burrows after lying neglected for centuries in the Manuscript Collection. This particular version has been edited for the Wigmore Hall performance by the Band’s cellist and director Tatty Theo. This is a rare opportunity to hear the Water Music in an original chamber formation as conceived by Handel. The programme also features virtuosic trio sonatas by Handel, Leclair and Corelli.

The award-winning Brook Street Band is acclaimed throughout the UK and Europe for its stylistic and passionate performances on period instruments. The Band is named after the London street where Handel lived and worked and his music forms the core of its programmes. The members of The Brook Street Band are:

Marianna Szücs and Katalin Kertész, baroque violins

Hannah McLaughlin, baroque oboe/recorder

Tatty Theo, baroque cello

Carolyn Gibley, harpsichord, chamber organ

The Band performs on original instruments, including baroque instruments played in Handel’s time, and modern copies in authentic period style.

The keyboard instruments are provided by renowned English maker Alan Gotto. For this concert the band will use a double manual harpsichord after Mietke c.1710 and a continuo organ by Goetze and Gwynn 1980, after 17th century English models.

Stanley Sadie, Editor Grove Dictionary of Music, said of the Band in July 2002

'The musicians endeared themselves to the audience . . .These lively, enthusiastic, young women, eager, knowledgeable, highly skilled, put their whole selves into what they are doing. They care passionately about the music, as their lively commentaries made clear, and this communicates itself to everyone present.'

The Band's debut CD featuring The Oxford Water Music will be released later this year.
