As Hanssler's monumental Bach Edition rolls on we continue to be amazed and
stupefied by the diverse beauty of this unique composer's music. This well
filled collection of chorales contains some lovely music and the short nature
of each piece surely makes them easier on the ear, such is the sublimity
of the countless melodies on offer. As the notes tell us, these chorales
have been garnered from many different sources including the splendid organ
settings, choral works and passions. Heard on their own in these weighty
choral arrangements, the firmness and security of the tunes are splendidly
re-created, almost in an authorative manner. It would be difficult for the
listener not to be charmed by any one of the tracks such is their continuous
proffering of heartfelt praise to God. You may not always agree with the
old fashioned style in evidence here but on the whole the project is indeed
an admirable one. Helmuth Rilling's eagle eye is definitely at work here
as he coaxes all performers and ensembles to perform with customary gusto.
The subjects of Easter, Ascension, Pentecost and Trinity provide us with
an amply wide range of topical material and all texts are translated in English
thus aiding the non-German speaker inestimably. I would even recommend this
disc out of context of Hanssler's edition as its appeal definitely transcends
the strict boundaries of that awesome collection.
