Woody Allen, like the late Stanley Kubrick,
often resorts to using classical music to underscore his films. Like Kubrick
his taste and choice is often spot on – I am thinking of his use of Gershwin
in Manhattan and the eclectic choice he made for Melinda Melinda.
For his new film, shot here in the United Kingdom, Match Point, he has
selected operatic arias contrasting old Caruso recordings with some splendid
modern performances, the most dramatic of which is surely ‘Desdemona rea!’ from
Verdi’s Otello which must have real impact and resonance in the film (I
have yet to catch up with it).
For opera buffs and those who are swayed to
purchase on content (checking on duplications elsewhere in their collections I
append the track listing vfrom the album as below.
