Eve's BayouForget the first track, a negligible pop song written and performed by Raúl Midón and move right along to Terence Blanchard's sultry, vibrant, witty, sophisticated and oh so classy orchestral jazz score for the latest Spike Lee joint.
She Hate Me is the 13th collaboration between the director and composer/ trumpeter/bandleader, and is scored for a medium sized orchestra of 55 players with a sound ranging from sinuous, smokey late night jazz to swinging urban city vibes. Picking standout tracks is something of a fools errand as the entire score is so delightfully melodic, charming and plain captivating. Lets just say the main theme is an utterly infectious joy given many imaginative treatments, while the more introspective elements of the score offer a lyricism and tenderness rarely found in modern film music.
Away from the orchestral jazz sound a cue such as 'BBQ Up On The Hill' has something of the spectral tension of the darker moments of Thomas Newman's The Horse Whisperer, while 'My Egg Your Sperm' is remarkable for the title alone.
The one score track not composed by Blanchard is 'Will O' The Wisp', a creative reworking by Patrick Russ of Manuel de Falla's piece from the 1915 ballet El amor brujo (Love The Magician).
An impeccably tasteful and melodic disc which for those who discover it may well long outlive the rather indifferently received feature which spawned it.
