A real mixed bag with the emphasis far more on pop songs than I would have liked, leaving this double CD less rewarding for serious film score admirers, although more than likely (or so the producers would hope) it will go down very well with general music fans.
Of course with a collection as comprehensive as this there has to be some real highlights and for me they tend to appear on CD One with John Barry’s The Persuaders and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service as wonderful as ever. But really there are just too many songs included here, something that seems to happen more and more often on compilations like this; ‘Green Onions’, ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ and ‘Feeling Good’ are just a few examples. Perhaps it’s just me, but I would much rather have heard something like Edwin Astley’s tremendous theme(s) from Danger Man (AKA: Secret Agent) (the second version is a personal favourite) and I’m sure every reader could name another candidate of their own. Incidentally, the great Ron Grainer has apparently had a name change according to the CD sleeve and is now known as Roy!
Anyway, good value for money if you enjoy this kind of thing and there’s no denying the quality of the best of what’s on offer. Just a pity about those damn songs!
