Here's another in Nimbus's new series of spruced up refurbishments in stimulated
stereo. This time rather than focussing on the work of one artist, this
collection is of favourite on-screen songs performed by famous stars of the
late 1920s and the 1930s; the period of the Great Depression when people
flocked to the cinema to be transported from the bleakness of their lives.
We have Al Jolson singing Lullaby of Broadway; Ruby Keeler and Dick Powell
on '42nd Street', Shirley Temple 'On the Good Ship Lollipop'. Nelson Eddy
as an intrepid Canadian mountie sings of Rose Marie and he joins Jeanette
MacDonald in 'the Indian Love Call' and Fred Astaire serenades Ginger Rogers
singing 'I'm Putting All My Eggs in One Basket'. Together they sing 'Let's
Face the Music and Dance' and 'A Fine Romance'. Judy Garland sings to Clark
-- 'Dear Mr Gable (You Made Me love You)'and the incomparable Sophie Tucker
belts out 'Some of These Days'
Another great nostalgic wallow from Nimbus. My only reservation is that so
many of these numbers are available in other collections. Nevertheless -
