He held various small appointments and then in 1543 was made a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal, remaining so for the rest of his life. Both Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth granted him leases and money. In 1572 he and Byrd were granted a royal licence giving them the sole rights for printing music and music paper in England.
