PANUFNIK, Andrzej

d Twickenham 27 October 1991 aged seventy-seven
He studied theory and composition at the Warsaw State Conservatory from 1935 to 1936, then conducted at the Vienna State Academy from 1937 to 1938, and continued his studies in Paris and London until 1939. He was in Warsaw during World War II, and his pre-1944 compositions were destroyed by fire. From 1945 to 1947 he was conductor of the Cracow and Warsaw Philharmonic orchestra. He served on various cultural committees in Poland and with UNESCO. In 1954 he decided to leave Poland and settle in England where, apart from occasional conducting, he spends his life composing.
