MATHIAS, William

d 1992
He graduated from the University College of Wales in 1956, and was awarded an open scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music to study composition with Lennox Berkeley and piano with Peter Katin. He became a lecturer in music at the University College in 1959, was elected a fellow of the Royal Academy in 1965, and gained a doctorate in music from the University of Wales in 1966. In 1968 he was awarded the Bax Society Prize and became senior lecturer in composition at Edinburgh University; in 1970 he became professor and head of the department of music at the University College of North Wales in Bangor.
