Here it is. For obvious reasons its latin genus is called
Phallus. I used to know it as Phallus phalloides but the name seems
to have changed now to Phallus impudicus. It is about the size
of a human erect penis. It is not poisonous and the immature fruiting
bodies, which look like a pair of testicles in this picture, are eaten
in France and Germany. They have been referred to as witches eggs. John
Gerard in his General Historie of Plants of 1597 called it the Pricke
mushroom for obvious reasons. Impudicus is derived from shameless or immodest.
When the egg starts to grow it does so with enough force to push itself
through asphalt. |
