Ornithopus perpusillus Common Bird’s foot

This plant was abundant on heaths and commons around London. It is a leguminous plant which means its roots bear little nitrogen fixing nodules which render the soil more fertile for other plants. Peas and Clover are also leguminous plants and are grown by farmers for this reason – a natural fertiliser.
