Water gardens were introduced into this country by Charles II and the only extant example in the National Trust is at Westbury Court (above) near Gloucester, built between 1696-1705. London and Wise were technically adept in all these areas and only too happy to oblige with a comprehensive landscape and nursery-supply service. It is not clear if London and Wise were involved at Charlecote. The original ideas for a water garden were those of Captain Thomas but he died prematurely of smallpox leaving piles of gravel everywhere according to Alice Fairfax-Lucy in ‘Charlecote and the Lucys’. Col George Lucy completed the gardens but I am not clear who produced the design for it..
