The gift of the second folio was from the Reverend Elias Webb. He lived at Sherbourne. It is on the right just as you turn off the M40 onto the Wellesbourne Road. Sherbourne had been given to Thomas Lucy I by Edward the VI in 1553. It remained in the Lucy family until 1721 and then it was owned by the Burgoynes of Wroxall later passing to the Webb family in 1749. It was enclosed by the act of 1799 and Elias was awarded the manor and nearly 276 acres. The other 493 acres went to Thomas Webb Edge. At his inheritance Elias was only one-year old but by 1831 The Rev Elias Webb was holding the whole manor. It would seem that Rev John Hammond Lucy, father of George HL, assisted the young Elias in the administration of his estate as he was growing up – hence the gift.

This letter, mounted inside our folio, says
Dear Sir,
I take the liberty of sending to you an edition of Shakespeare. I obtained it
from one of the greatest book collectors of
the age and it is said to be a
very fine copy. If you do not possess such a
One - I beg the favour of you to accept
the enclosed, as a mark of grateful respect
I have - for the kindness shown to me,
For many years, by your late father and
I think the book itself will not discredit
Your library at Charlecote house.
I have the honour to be
Dear Sir
your obedient servant
Elias Webb
18th August 1828.

That book collector was probably Halliwell-Phillips who we will meet later
