| Some books have a hidden beauty called fore-edge
paintings. These are painted on the narrow strip at the very edge of a page.
When the book is closed you cannot see them but if the book is opened and
the pages bent over, all is revealed. There is a very fine set of Shakespeare
in the Charlecote library, each book has a different fore-edge painting
of a stately home.
