So how are books made?
The pages are printed on a large sheet of paper, about the size of an open broadsheet newspaper. It is printed on both sides but the paper is going to be folded and cut so the layout is important.
The sheet on the bottom left is folded along the mid-line as shown in the picture above. You can see pages 4 and 5 but behind it you can see 2. That was printed on the reverse – see the numbers in circles or as shown bottom right. Also pages 4 and 5 were printed upside down compared to 1 and 8.The paper is folded again so all the pages now appear in the right order. This set of pages is called a gathering or a signature.
